And the former Bognor Regis Town midfielder, who returned to the club as a manager alongside Jamie Howell in December after the departure of Robbie Blake, will be joined by his brother and former Pompey player David Birmingham, the club’s fitness coach.
Another ex-Bognor player who has confirmed he will be taking part in the match, which takes place on March 16, kick-off 3pm, is Phil Turner, boss of famous pastry emporium Turner’s Pies.
Phil, who shot to fame making the finals of the hit BBC show the Apprentice last year, is a keen sportsman and was a promising footballer in his younger days, playing more than 50 times for his hometown club under then manager Jack Pearce.
And he is ready to put his skills to the test once more when he leads a team in the celebrity charity match to raise money for the company’s charity partner Chestnut Tree House children’s hospice.
Phil says the chance to play and at the same time raise money for such a deserving cause is something that he cherishes. He added: “The children’s charity provides hospice care services and community support for children and young people with life-limiting and life-threatening conditions in East and West Sussex and South East Hampshire. The work they do is simply wonderful and we’d love to see as many supporters come along to enjoy the day and give what they can to help with the financing of the hospice.”
TV star Danny Dyer proved to be a big hit with fans last April when we hosted a match set up by Sellebrity Soccer UK, the same organisation as those behind next month’s game.
Dyer, famous for his role as Mick Carter in BBC soap EastEnders, showed off his ability, to help boost the coffers of My Shining Star — children’s cancer charity to support the financial need of families going through the trauma of childhood cancer. And the Cockney actor, who scored in a 4-4 draw, thrilled fans by posing for selfies and signing autographs after he helped his side to a penalty shootout victory.
Calum Best, son of football legend George Best, played too alongside a mixture of media personalities and former Bognor players in the match.
As and when celebrities taking part are confirmed we will bring you updates on the line ups.
